Why this match matters

Australia qualified for the 2026 World Cup in North America as part of one of the most competitive Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifying campaigns in recent memory. Paraguay got there through CONMEBOL qualifying after a 16-year absence from the tournament. This is their first World Cup since South Africa 2010, where they reached the quarter-finals.

Group D is tight. Australia, Paraguay, the USA, and Turkey are all in it. Three points on Friday morning against Paraguay would put the Socceroos in a solid position heading into the rest of the group stage. This is not a throwaway match.

Paraguay's squad is built around Miguel Almiron, who has been one of the better attacking midfielders in Major League Soccer for the past few years, and Julio Enciso, a 22-year-old attacker who can cause real problems. They're organised, they're physical, and they haven't been at a World Cup in 16 years, so they'll come at it hungry.

If you're coming from the CBD it's about a 15-minute drive east, or you can jump on a bus along Glynburn Road.
